Why Type II exists
The future is late
Everything needed to start building in space already exists. Ask when humanity actually does it and the answer comes back: a hundred years. That number is not a forecast. It is an assumption, and assumptions like it have collapsed before, always the same way.
Nothing here is waiting on a discovery
Rockets land and fly again. Machines see, grasp, and correct themselves. Autonomy gets measurably better every month. There is no missing physics in this problem, no unbuilt prerequisite, no law standing in the way.
What is missing is a decision. A hundred years is the sum of a thousand reasonable people each concluding this is someone else’s problem for later. It is what you get from institutions rewarded for being right slowly rather than early, and from an industry that politely agrees the interesting part happens after everyone currently working has retired.
Timelines like this have collapsed before
Each of these was called decades away by serious people, right up until it wasn’t. The interval is measured from the first working demonstration to the thing that was supposed to be a generation out.

None of those were schedules. They were decisions.
What has never been done
Nothing has ever assembled a structure in space without a person present. Not once. Every large thing humanity wants to build off Earth stops at that step: power at stellar scale, factories, habitats, eventually a swarm around the sun.
It is not a physics problem. It is a machine that has not been built, by people who have not decided to build it.
The name is the destination
A Type II civilization runs on the full output of a star. Everything humanity has ever made — every city, every engine, every war — ran on less than a billionth of one ordinary star’s output.
The rest is radiating past us right now, unused, because nothing exists that can build at the scale required to catch it. That is the whole gap, and it closes with machinery, not with waiting.
Not looking for people who need convincing
Looking for the ones who read “a hundred years” and got annoyed.
If the reasoning is wrong, that is worth hearing. If it is right, and you want to work on the first machine that assembles something where no person can go, it is the same conversation. The relevant experience is robotics, autonomy, controls, computer vision, radiation-hardened design, or time spent anywhere machines have to work unattended and unrecovered.
Current status, stated plainly. There is no legal entity, no hardware, no prototype, no contract, no grant, and no team. Nothing on this page is in progress.
